When we begin construction in a new market, we make every effort to notify the surrounding communities using mailers, doorhangers, and signs. We also post information about construction on our website about what you can expect when Metronet begins building, or expanding, our network in your neighborhood.

Construction ProcessWhat is an Easement?

Located on most properties, utility easements are designated by city ordinance to be accessible to utilities, such as gas, water, electric, and cable providers. Metronet builds our fiber-optic network in these utility easements.

Step 1

Locate Existing Utilities

Crews identify underground utilities and mark their locations with flags and landscape-safe paint in yards, as well as along roads and sidewalks.

Step 2

Expose Existing Utilities

Construction teams enter work areas and begin digging to expose existing utilities. This step helps minimize damage when crews install our fiber lines.

Place Conduit and Fiber

Crews place conduit pipes then pull fiber through them. Total construction time varies based on factors like neighborhood size and weather.

Repair Impacted Areas

Once construction is complete and weather permits, our crews return to restore the affected areas by raking, seeding, and applying straw to the lawns.

Frequently Asked Questions About Metronet Construction

Are Metronet crews allowed to be on my property?

  • Yes, Metronet is legally allowed to be on your property. Metronet obtains all the permits required to build our fiber network. Like other utility companies, Metronet has the right to access the city's right of way, which extends from sidewalk to sidewalk and easement areas, typically located along the street, the sidewalk, the rear lot line, or between two lots.

    Utility companies use easements to construct and maintain overhead and underground lines. Metronet crews have legal access to these areas to install their fiber cables, in addition to equipment such as boxes buried at ground level, which are typically placed in a central location utilized by multiple utility providers. If your easement is within a fenced area of your property, Metronet will need access to this area. If you have any questions or concerns, call our customer care line at (877) 407-3224.

Why are Metronet crews in my yard if I didn't sign up for the service and I don't want it?

  • Metronet is creating a 100% fiber network throughout your city. As with other utility companies, our goal is to make our fiber internet as widely accessible as possible. There is no requirement or obligation to sign up for service if Metronet crews are on your property.

What if I have a dog fence, sprinkler system, sump pump line, or other underground item?

  • Please let us know! It's very important to notify us if any of these items are in your yard. Metronet will provide you with flags to mark the locations of these items, or you can use landscape-safe spray paint (not provided by Metronet).

How long will construction crews be in my yard?

  • The length of time required for each project varies. Our crews may be in your yard anywhere from 30 minutes up to one day. If other utilities are overhead, we'll install fiber-optic cables on existing poles. If utilities are underground, we'll bury the network in the same areas. Before beginning underground work, we will have other utility companies locate their transmission lines and will temporarily move any obstacles within the utility easement.

Can I remove the flags or paint in my yard?

  • Please do not remove the flags or paint until construction is complete. We are legally required to have utilities locate their underground transmission line, such as gas, water, and electric lines prior to construction. It is important that the flags or paint markings remain in place until we are finished, as their presence helps our crews avoid these areas. If you see flags or temporary landscape-safe spray paint in your yard, construction should begin within a week - weather permitting.

What happens to the area of my lawn that was disturbed?

  • When construction is complete, and as weather permits, our crews will return to your property to restore areas where digging occurred.

What if my lawn, fence, or other property is damaged during construction?

  • The construction phase of this project is temporary and our crews do their best to minimize impact to your property. However, technicians do need to hang fiber-optic cables on utility poles or run them underground in order to extend service to subscribing residents. If you have any questions or concerns about construction, you can submit a claim here. We promise to answer all inquiries, address any concerns, and repair any damage that occurs during the construction of our network.
