Twice a year, once in the spring and again in the fall, services for all television providers experience brief disruptions due to sun outages. These disruptions occur when the sun passes directly behind the satellites responsible for signal transmission. When the sun is aligned with a satellite, solar radiation, which is the energy emitted by the sun, interferes with the satellite’s signal causing a brief disruption. During an outage, TV pictures might become filled with static, or in some cases disappear completely.

Metronet sources video content signal transmission from several satellites, making it impossible to predict the exact time these outages will occur; however, they will generally occur in the spring from late February through mid-March, and in the fall from early to mid-October, once in mid-afternoon, and again in the evening. Most outages will last between 5 – 10 minutes. Internet and phone services should not be affected.
